Up on the Housetop

Up on the housetop reindeer pause;
Out jumps good old Santa Claus,
Down through the chimney with lots of toys,
All for the little ones’ Christmas joys.

Ho, ho, ho, who wouldn’t go?
Oh, up on the housetop, click, click, click!
Down through the chimney, with good Saint Nick.

Away in a manger

Away in a manger no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say;
“Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him
As you shouted out with glee,
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
You’ll go down in history.”

October Halloween Songs

Halloween

I’m a little Pumpkin
(Tune: “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little pumpkin orange and round
Here is my stem
There is the ground
When I get all cut up
Don’t you shout
Just open me up and scoop me out

Have a Happy Halloween
(Tune: “Clementine”)

Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween
Trick or treat some, then you’ll eat some
Have a happy Halloween

Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween
Counting cookies, counting candy,
Counting every Jellybean.

Ring the front door, ring the back door
Ride a broomstick in between.
Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween

Three Black Cats
(Tune: Three Blind Mice)

Three black cats, three black cats,
In black hats, in black hats,
They all jumped into the Halloween brew.
They teased the ghosts and the goblins too!
Have you ever seen such a Hullabaloo??
On Halloween, On Halloween!

Little Witches
(Tune: “Ten Little Indians”)

One little, two little, three little witches
Flying over haystacks, jumping over ditches
Sliding down the moon and wearing out their britches
Hi Ho Halloween’s here.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin Song
(Tune, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)

Pumpkin pumpkin on the ground
How’d you get so big and round
Planted as a seed so small
Now you are a great big ball
Pumpkin pumpkin on the ground
How’d you get so big and round

The Witch Casts a Spell(Tune: "The Farmer in the Dell")

The witch casts a spell,
The witch casts a spell,
Such sights are seen on Halloween,
The witch casts a spell.

The scarecrow comes alive
The goblin leads the way
The spooks swoop and swirl
The clock sends them home
The jack o' lanterns glow

10 Little Ghosts (tune: 10 little Indians)

One little, two little, three little Ghosts
Four little, five little, six little Ghosts,
Seven little, eight little , nine little Ghosts,
Ten little Ghosts go BOO!

hot potato

Here's a cute easy way to make some "hot potatoes" for music makers. Just buy some nude knee high stockings (I found mine for $.33 at walmart). Stuff with fiberfill, and trim (the less stocking at the ends the better). Sew ends together then pull needle threw the stocking several times in random places. Make a quick little stitch and pull to your next "eye". They're really easy and really fun to make!

homemade instruments

Here are some easy and fun instruments you can make for "marching and movement"Walmart has a package of 16 dowels all cut to length. Then just buy a spool of each color of the rainbow...glue on (I tried hot glue and then ended up using tacky craft glue)
another trick for this project is to put all the spools of ribbon on one of the unused dowels. You can pull the ribbon at equal lengths and cut them all at the same time - this saves a bunch of time!
I was able to make 15 ribbon sticks (anyone have a better name for these!?) with the 10 yard spools of ribbon. Total cost was less than $5
A girl in my last ward , Lanice, made these. The kids had so much fun running around to fun music , twirling and dancing with their rainbows. Here is another really simple project. I bought a bag on jingle bells ($1.76) and a spool of thicker ribbon ($1.98) and sewed on three bells. I plan to add some Velcro so the kids could wear them as bracelets or hold the circle of bells during marching. (these are also great during singing time in December)

Some other great ideas from Jodi in UT:
plastic eggs or film canisters w/rice or beans for shakers, an empty formula can with a ribbon attached to hang around your neck and chopsticks for a drum and drum sticks

Thanks for the great ideas Jodi! I made some eggs and the kids loved them! We shook them to Laurie Berkner: I Know a Chicken. We had soooo much fun with this one:) Oh, and I put 18 of them into an egg carton, colored the bottoms of the carton slots for each egg. The kids love putting their colored egg back into it's "home". I've also used yogurt containers for drums, and I think I need to make a few more, the kids almost always grab them first.

Our Music Makers Songs!

Here is another hand out that we give out with the above. It has the words to all of our music that we sing for welcome and closing.

Music Makers Songs

Hello Song
Welcome to music makers: hello, hello, hello.
We’d like to welcome __________ (child’s name)
Hello, hello, hello. (sung by child or if child is to young, parent/leader)
We’d like to welcome __________ (repeated until each child is greeted)

What do we do when we come to sing?
(sing as many or few of the verses as desired.)

What do we do when we come to sing, come to sing, come to sing,
What do we do when we come to sing, when we come to music makers?

We like to say hi to all our friends, all our friends, all our friends,
We like to say hi to all our friends, when we come to music makers.

We like to sit for a circle time, circle time, circle time,
We like to sit for a circle time, when we come to music makers.

We like to sing and clap our hands, clap our hands, clap our hands,
We like to sing and clap our hands, when we come to music makers.

We like to march in a marching band, marching band, marching band,
We like to march in a marching band, when we come to music makers.

We like to dance and move around, move around, move around,
We like to dance and move around, when we come to music makers.

We like to sit for story time, story time, story time,
We like to sit for story time, when we come to music makers.

(You may cut out verses as all of them together makes a lengthy song. I often leave out circle time. With the marching and dancing we have the kids stand up in place and march and dance, and then return to sitting with the story time.)

La La Song is on a CD http://www.britemusic.com/review/product/list/id/219/category/33/
this is a link to the cd. The children follow the leader, and the song with a puppet.

Goodbye song:
Goodbye________, Goodbye________, Goodbye________, we’re glad that you could come. (Repeated until all the children are sung goodby to.)

[It’s nice when the person who signs up to be in charge of singing time brings paper copies of the songs or fingerplays so the mothers can participate better and help the children learn.]

What is Music Makers

The following is what we print up and hand out at the beginning of each year.

WELCOME TO
MUSIC MAKERS!

We hope that you will join us for “Music Makers” – a fun (and free!) Preschool program geared toward teaching children through music. We meet every Monday from 10:00 to 11:00. Every week we gather to sing, learn finger plays, march in a band, dance to music and listen to stories – and we have a good time doing it! Here are a few guidelines that are helpful for the program:

Children of all ages are welcome at Music Makers, but we do ask that a parent be with them at all times. It is a great Mommy (or Daddy) and me type program. We would like for the children to sit in the small chairs in the front row and for you to sit directly behind them. We feel that this will allow for maximum parent-child involvement and will enable parents to deal with any disruptions quickly and quietly.

We like to think that Music Makers is all about having fun WITH our children. Small children (like adults) are often hesitant about participating, so please jump right in and show your children what fun it can be to sing and dance! If your child is a little unsure about singing the “Hello Song”, please sing “hello” with them until they grow a little more confident and can do it by themselves!

As much as we enjoy visiting with friends we seldom get a chance to see, please help us remember that Music Makers is all about the children. It is hard for them to learn, and hard for their teachers to teach them when the adults are busy visiting. If you like chatting, we’d love to have you come early or stay late to help set up or clean up! Thanks!
There are lots of ways that you can help out at Music Makers! Let us know if you play the piano and remember to sign up so you can be a part of the teaching! We also need parents to sign up to bring the monthly treats. Finally, please have your child bring his or her puppet each week.
