homemade instruments

Here are some easy and fun instruments you can make for "marching and movement"Walmart has a package of 16 dowels all cut to length. Then just buy a spool of each color of the rainbow...glue on (I tried hot glue and then ended up using tacky craft glue)
another trick for this project is to put all the spools of ribbon on one of the unused dowels. You can pull the ribbon at equal lengths and cut them all at the same time - this saves a bunch of time!
I was able to make 15 ribbon sticks (anyone have a better name for these!?) with the 10 yard spools of ribbon. Total cost was less than $5
A girl in my last ward , Lanice, made these. The kids had so much fun running around to fun music , twirling and dancing with their rainbows. Here is another really simple project. I bought a bag on jingle bells ($1.76) and a spool of thicker ribbon ($1.98) and sewed on three bells. I plan to add some Velcro so the kids could wear them as bracelets or hold the circle of bells during marching. (these are also great during singing time in December)

Some other great ideas from Jodi in UT:
plastic eggs or film canisters w/rice or beans for shakers, an empty formula can with a ribbon attached to hang around your neck and chopsticks for a drum and drum sticks

Thanks for the great ideas Jodi! I made some eggs and the kids loved them! We shook them to Laurie Berkner: I Know a Chicken. We had soooo much fun with this one:) Oh, and I put 18 of them into an egg carton, colored the bottoms of the carton slots for each egg. The kids love putting their colored egg back into it's "home". I've also used yogurt containers for drums, and I think I need to make a few more, the kids almost always grab them first.

I’ve Been Working on the Railroad
I've been working on the railroad
All the live-long day.
I've been working on the railroad
Just to pass the time away.
Don't you hear the whistle blowing,
Rise up so early in the morn;
Don't you hear the captain shouting,
"Dinah, blow your horn!"

Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?

Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
Someone's in the kitchen I know
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
Strummin' on the old banjo!
Singin' fi, fie, fiddly-i-o
Fi, fie, fiddly-i-o-o-o-o
Fi, fie, fiddly-i-o
Strummin' on the old banjo

The Airplane Song
http://pbskids.org/barney/children/music/airplane.html

Chorus:
Oh, we are flying in an airplane,
Looking out the window,
Watching the clouds go by.
Flying in an airplane,
Looking out the window,
Up so very high.

Looking out the window,
We can see the wings.
Down below we see other things.
Like little tiny buildings
And cars so small,
It makes me feelLike I'm really tall.

Chorus

Pretending I'm a pilot is a lot of fun,
I think when I grow up
I really might be one.
But for now I'm just enjoying
Being in this plane,
Safe from the snow and from the rain.

Chorus

Couldn't do without them too!
Can't wait 'til you grow up,
There’s so many jobs for you!

September Finger Plays for Careers

Here are some fingerplays for the Careers theme:

A Fireman
This brave fireman is going to bed
hold up right thumb
Down on the pillow he lays his head
right thumb on left palm
Wraps himself in his blanket tight
curl fingers around thumb
And plans to sleep this way all night
close eyes
But the fire alarm rings! He opens his eyes!
open eyes
Quickly he's dressed and down the pole he slides
right hand slides down left arm in a grip from elbow to wrist
Then he climbs on the truck to go, go, go.
hands manipulate imaginary steering wheel

Five Little Firefighters
Five little fire fighters sit very still
hold up five fingers
Until they see a five on top of the hill
Number one rings the bell, ding-dong.
bend down thumb
Number 2 pulls his big boots on.
bend down pointer finger
Number 3 climbs on the truck right away.
bend down middle finger
Number 4 joins him, no one can wait.
bend down ring finger
Number 5 drives the truck to the fire.
bend down little finger
The big yellow flames go higher and higher.
spread arms
Whooo-ooo! Whooo-ooo! Hear the fire truck say
imitate siren
As all of the cars get out of the way.
Shhh! goes the water from the fire hose spout,
rub palms together
And quicker than a wink the fire is out!
clap hands.

To see what he could see, see, see

With a bang and a bang
And a bang, bang, bang.
